Following the creation of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) between 1989 and 1996, The European Language Portfolio was developed and piloted by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, from 1998 until 2000. It was launched on a pan-European level during the European Year of Languages and is widely used in Europe with more than 80 accredited versions of the portfolio in existence.
More recently, the writers of the documentation to support Curriculum for Excellence referred to the CEFR in their deliberations, prior to completion of the Experiences and Outcomes.
Now, Scottish CILT is delighted to be hosting the UK’s first workshop on the use of the European Language Portfolio.
There are a number of advantages to the learner of using an accredited Portfolio, among them, the removal of barriers to mobility and parity in education and employment throughout Europe and the debate is yet to be engaged in Scotland as to how Scottish language learners can benefit. A key strength of the Portfolio is that it is solely for the use of, and the property of, the learner – which encourages motivation. Another is that it recognises partial qualifications, not the case elsewhere.
You are invited to participate in this event and contribute to the exploration of ELP use throughout Europe and how it may be applied in Scotland as we continue to implement curricular changes in line with CfE.
